We were referred to this vet for specialist Ophthalmic treatment after our young dog was found suffering from a severe eye ulcer as a result of dry eye syndrome and a scratch to the eye from his dew claw. By the time we were referred he had been suffering with the condition for 3 months. Our previous vets were prescribing various different treatments up to 14 eye drops per day plus pain killers and this was just not working. After having to take so much time from work and spending nights without sleep for a dog that was in pain we were at our wits end. On our referral to Seadown was smooth and an appointment made within 24 hours. The vet and all staff were excellent, kind, friendly and professional. The vet soon saw the distress that we were all (including our little boy) under and immediately recommend hospitalisation for him, this was wonderful at last someone was listening to us and wanted to monitor our dog to see whether the medication was adequate. Rather than operate they wanted to provide a chance for the Ulcer to heal with the correct medication. He wasn't eating so they cooked him some fresh chicken. They soon stopped the pain and started treatments including overnight care, unfortunately after 4 days the ulcer was persistent and we gave them the go ahead to operate. Within days of the operation we had our boy back to his old obstinate self. After treatment care was excellent and our boy got so excited to see the staff, a sure sign they all treatment him very well. We can't thank the team enough for their professional and caring manner and although an hours drive from home considering changing to them permanently. We would recommend them. Thank you to all at Seadown for such a valuable job.

We will never bring another dog to Seadown Vets after the devastating experience we had with them. Our one year old dog was admitted for a routine cherry eye procedure and we received a phone call one hour later to say he was dead. While the cause of our dogs death is unknown, it transpired that he was muzzled without our permission (Seadown have acknowledged in writing that we did not consent to this) and we never would have allowed the procedure to go ahead had we been made aware of this. Our dog was excitable but also nervous and would have been in complete distress with a Baskerville muzzle on his face in our opinion the practice should have phoned us to advise that a muzzle would be necessary in order to proceed however we were not given the opportunity to object to it and never saw our dog again. In Seadowns Animal Handling Rules policy it states:Information from the owner regarding any vices the dog may have, should be sought on admittance. Owners should muzzle their own animals if they feel it is a necessity. Clear instructions should be written on the admit sheet and kennel regarding the temperament of the dog. We were never consulted on our dogs temperament when we admitted him and there was no mention of the use of muzzles either vocally or on their consent form. Seadown have stated that they will take this opportunity to review our muzzling policy and the wording of our consent forms, however nothing will bring our dog back and we will be bringing our beloved pets elsewhere in the future.
Vet ResponseWe are obviously devastated that Mr M's dog died while being given an anaesthetic at our practice, and we are sorry that he is still unhappy despite our private discussions with him in depth, after the event.
