I have recently been introduced to the new pet behaviour vet Elena, after discussing behaviour problems with my puppy with the practice manager Tanya. Elena is a new member of staff all the way from Italy, but she speaks very good English.
My 8 month old dachshund puppy is a beautiful dog but, He is a nightmare at night, wanting to wake and feed when I want to sleep. He chews everything and walking him is not a pleasant experience. He barks at people and dogs and pulls on the lead constantly.
When I arrived at the practice, Elena met me at the door. She made no fuss of Simba but, continued to discuss the issues I raised with me. Simba did not bark once, which I noticed immediately. This was unheard of with strangers. She noted everything down and then went through them one by one suggesting to me the way forward to improve Simbas behaviour.
She advised that a I purchase a Mekuti harness and lead, giving me more control over walks but, without Simba pulling. Amongst other things, she advised to introduce pigs ears for chewing and walking 40 minutes a day, twice daily. Also, she advised to go back to initial training, treats for good behaviour and sit commands on meeting strangers and dogs and to stop the unecessary barking.
I have been doing the above for three days now and already I can see a difference in his sleep patterns and feeding. I am getting a better nights sleep, walking is becoming easier, although I know I have a long way to go yet but, I feel we have turned a corner now and I feel more confident for the future.
I would not hesitate to recommend Elena to anyone having behaviour issues with their dog. Simba enjoyed the experience with plenty of treats and praise for good behaviour. She has a calming influence and her knowledge is remarkable. I am even trying these suggestions out on my 10 year old dog, who also has a barking problem.
