Hello!
Possibilities for any lump include cancer (often non painful), hyperplasia, polyp, foreign body reaction (an eg of inflammation - often painful), lick damage, allergy, eosinophilic reaction and infection. If you type 'lump' into our blog search bar, you wil find much information to speculate over. A simple history and prod in a consult will not always tell you what the lump is (in fact, I'm afraid it's more likely not to) so your vet may wish to sample a few cells, depending on their findings and suspicions / the pets' situation.
If a lump is getting progressively worse on a faster timescale or seems at risk of this, or is obviously painful (eg if the patient is lame or biting themselves and making themselves sore), you should call your vets and let them triage over the phone. Otherwise, waiting for a weekday to call to have a lump checked seems reasonable.
