My German shepherd was neutered on Monday 7/19. These are pictures of his scrotum today, 7/24. It seems to be uncomfortable for him to sit, and when we touch it he does turn around to lick our hands as that's his way of asking us to leave him alone.
From what I can tell, nothing looks infected, it isn't warm to the touch, no discharge from the incision... just all this swelling that seems to be uncomfortable for him.
I'm just wanting to know if this is normal or if we should get him in to the vet on Monday or if it is more urgent and we should see an emergency vet tomorrow. Thank you!
Hello! Scrotal swelling isn't 'normal' but nor is it uncommon as an unwanted side effect.
You should call your emergency vet (they may even have an arrangement with your usual vet about seeing post op checks out of hours) to ask them to assess the situation over the phone.
They may, for example, advocate more pain relief (never give human pain meds to dogs at home as one or two of the very common ones that people tend to give, cause devastating kidney failure in dogs at low doses).
Best of luck and please do let us know how you get on.
