Hey all! This is my first time using this but I’d love a second opinion on this. Long story! On July 17th my foster puppy and 5 year old pitbull were playing. While playing the puppy accidentally got two small scratches on her eyelid. Her eye wasn’t affected. I had some sterile wipes and wiped it down, put some neosporin on it and moved on. However, her eye got a bit purple so I took her to my vet. She has awful seasonal skin allergies so the vet prescribed her antibiotics for her skin and eye called Clindamycin, and some antibiotic eye ointment called Erythromycin. After a few days her eyelid swelling went down and her skin started to turn pink again. However, I guess it started to itch her so she made it worse while I was at work. She basically rubbed it open. I took her back to the vet and we got her a cone. The vet continued antibiotics and this time the eyelid didn’t want to really heal. She did bump it a few times but it definitely wasn’t healing like it should be according to my vet. So due to her skin allergies and eye not healing my vet wondered if she had a resistant bacteria or some sort of immune disorder, etc. Basically some underlying issue so she had a skin biopsy done close to her eye and in other areas. She was prescribed a different antibiotic called Cefpodoxime proxetil and we continued the eye ointment. The biopsy was done on 24th so it’s been about a week. Her eye appears to have grown back hair and is less irritated. It’s not healing as fast as the vet or I thought it would though. I feel awful since she’s been in a cone for a month roughly. I attached pictures of the eye progression. The bottom should be the most recent. I’m still waiting for biopsy results but I’m wondering if anyone has any experience with this? Will it just take awhile to heal? It’s definitely a little better but it really is taking awhile…I’ve spent so much money to try and help her and I just feel bad because she’s getting depressed. Her eye looks a bit greasy because of the ointment!
Hello! - and I'm sorry you're both having a traumatic time. Sometimes delicate skin can take a while to heal, particularly if it has been traumatised or infected previously, or the cell-type has changed. It sounds as though your vet has a plan and is following it, and you have a waiting game on your hands. I hear your frustration that nobody can make guarantees; your vet must be frustrated too. Sometimes it doesn't feel enough to say 'we're doing everything that we can,' but if they are then there is no more they can do. Obviously I don't know the case and am in no position to make any guarantees myself; if you do have doubts or concerns, you could ask whether a referral (to a skin specialist, perhaps?) might make any difference or help to ease your mind.
