Hello!  There are two broad reasons for limping; one is because a dog is in pain.  If you think of yourself with a stone in your shoe, you walk oddly to avoid the pain and that is what most limps are.  Infrequently, limps can occur without pain eg if a nerve is damaged, but most lamenesses are caused by pain and worn so well by the patient that owners tend to assume that they don't hurt.

There is a viscous cycle with weight in that lameness leads to lack of exercise and lack of exercise can lead to weight gain which leads to increased lameness.  The way to avoid weight gain would be to give a dog much less than their normal recommended ration when they are not exercising - check how much with your vet.   Having less weight to carry around is often good for big dogs' joints.

Best of luck going forward - it sounds as though, as you say, a vet check would be a good plan.
