Hi, I recently noticed on my Mini Poodle that his Anus is swollen and protrudes depending on how he stands. It also looks red. He hasn't been licking it. Is this any cause for concern? Should I bring him to the Vet? He has had Anal gland abscess in the past which were treated. I notice no blood in his stool. He is 7 years old. He was groomed on June 1st. What do you think it is? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Hello! I wonder whether this looks a lot more dramatic than previously, in part because he has been recently groomed and you can now see down to the skin (?) Around the anus does appear to be somewhat inflamed. Allergies and anal gland disease are common culprits in this area (the two are very closely linked). It seems a good idea to talk through this issue with your vet. An inflamed anus may not be something that comes and disappears again, but rather something that returns with increasing frequency, so if it is a possibility then having the condition assessed early may prove helpful.
