Hello, a few days ago I noticed some scabs on my dog Shadow's underbelly, in the groin area. I've attached photos, but it seems to be scabs with dark red skin beneath. These are just in her groin area, except I did find a small scabby area on her side. When I examine and clean the area, Shadow begins to lick the upper area of her paw. Some details on Shadow, she is 7 years old, slightly overweight but overall health. It has been extremely hot where we live the past few weeks and she has spent most of her time in the air conditioning. I would really appreciate any help. Shadow hates going to the vet and its always a struggle, so if this is something simple someone can identify and I can treat at home you'd be saving us. If there are any questions or any additional information/pictures I can provide, please let me know Thank you Steveshadowrash2shadowrash1

Hello!  I'm afraid that we are not a substitute for visiting the vet, but rather we try to help you to work together more effectively.   This lesion may be infected and sore and may also spread surprisingly quickly.  If your vet already knows your dog, a phone call or online chat and the photographs may be enough to get some treatment started in some situations (remember when we had to distance-call during Covid.)  However, this is at their discretion and they may need to examine your dog properly in order to prescribe appropriately.  I'm afraid that there is no escaping that this skin may requires treatment - and soon.  It is your vet alone who gets to diagnose your dog and if an over the counter medicine seems appropriate they will tell you. The products I would normally treat something like this with are all prescription medicines as far as I am aware.  Please contact your vets as soon as possible.

My German Shepherd gets these on her belly as well, we take our Ezra to a dermatologist and came to find out its like a yeast infection and it causes these round top skin layer scabs. They will prescribe antibiotics to treat it, bathes twice a month and this skin solution called DOUXO S3 PYO.
