Hello! There are a lot of things that it *could be,* from a mammal bite wound to a foreign body entry hole, to a glass / rock / litter cut, to an insect bite, bee sting, adder bite (which would be an emergency, btw) etc. My best hypothesis is that a small grass seed or similar - perhaps one of those with a sharp point, dragging some little hairs behind it - has entered the foot. In those cases, swelling and infection usually follow. Vets sometimes give antibiotics and anti-inflammatories to make the pain and swelling go away, but if there is a grass seed in there, it often recurs, perhaps having moved a little within the foot. Therefore, it would be a good idea to get this checked out by a vet and talk through the options.
