Is there any definitive paper or study that talks about transmitting human influenza to dogs?  I have seen many articles saying one way or the other, but I am hoping someone here has a study that absolutely shows one way or the other.  Thanks so much!

Thanks for your idea.  I actually went to a university library that is close to home, but all the articles I saw talked about blood work detecting the virus in some group of dogs.  I am more interested in the practical matter of people putting their face very close to our dog's face when they pet her when we are walking.  I just wanted to get a feel for how likely it is for her to have some bad human influenza symptoms when members of the public pet her during the flu season.

It is possible, and there are a number of research papers demonstrating the possibility that a human influenza A virus could infect a dog (this one, for example) However… it is pretty unlikely. Most human influenza strains aren’t capable of mounting a self-replicating infection in dogs, and the concern is more around infection of a dog with canine influenza (very very rare in the U.K., although reportedly more common in the US) and a human strain at the same time, resulting in viral reassortment. So, not impossible - but very unlikely in practice! Hope that helps!

Thank you, David, for your thoughtful reply.  The research paper you mentioned was very informative.  I think I will not worry about the casual contacts any more!
