Goodmorning! My 14 year old miniature poodle who has a chicken allergy and who was diagnosed with pancreatitis a couple of years ago eats Royal Canine Gastrointestinal Low Fat loaf. To my knowledge, it is the only LF food that doesn't contain chicken. She's been eating this for over 2 years and doing very well. Lately we have been struggling financially and although I have been eating a relativity poor diet and skipping meals to make sure that we can afford her food, sometimes I have no choice but to make half a can stretch for a day here and there instead of a whole can and sometimes supplement with lean ground turkey, sweet potato, and rice. My husband got a better job so we should be out of this bind soon. But for now I was wondering if lean turkey, sweet potato, and rice are nutritionally balanced enough or if you have any suggestions of what i can add or give her instead? Are there any lower cost options for perscription foods without chicken for pancreatitis that could work?

Hello!   First, I'm sorry to hear that you are in this predicament.  I'm sure that you are not alone - I know you are not - and your health is important, too.  I know that this isn't my concern, isn't what you asked me and risks coming over patronizing, but please make use of any resources you can to make sure that you yourself are receiving suitable nutrition.  Food banks and other resources may be available to you and it may be worth calling charities such as local shelters or the RSPCA in case they have left-over supplies of the particular food that you are seeking.  I know that it can be difficult to speak to your vet about, but would strongly recommend it, especially given that they will know you, and know that you are doing the best you can.  They understand your dogs' allergy profile (and whether they're sure - chicken allergies are actually rare) and should be able to help.  The diet that you suggest is, of course, a compromise:  home-made diets are extremely difficult to get right because it can be difficult to include certain nutrients.  A day here and a day there of an alternative diet can by more appropriate than swapping on a regular basis.  There are people who give their dogs vegetarian diets so there should be more than one chicken free-food available - again, your vet or nurse (nurses are the nutrition experts in a lot of practices now)  may be happy to research this for you.  Wishing both of you all the best and please do let us know how you get on.
