Dachshund IVDD

My 4yo mini dachshund showing strong signs of IVDD. Currently midway through one week of observation with crate rest and meds but will need CT scan to confirm. I have insurance (lifetime for £8k per episode) but when reading the small print I am worried that I may have invalidated this by not informing insurer that she bit a few months back. It didn’t even occur to me to do so, so not deliberate. It is recorded in her medical records as we had her checked out due to this being completely out of character. She has not done it since and vet even noted her calm presentation during the appt. I am now worried the insurer may not pay out, which I believe they do after any treatment? And wondered if anyone had similar experience? The worry of her condition is too much but this on top is overwhelming me. thanks

Hello - and I'm so sorry that you are in this really uncertain position.   It sounds as though your dog bit and you didn't think anything bigger of it at the time;  just put it down to whatever was going on around you.   But now of course, you know that your dog later had a sore back and are wondering if the biting could be - or could be construed to be - an early symptom. I'm afraid that I don't know the correct answer here - or indeed, the answer that the insurance company will come to, as I dont know their policies or what your vet has written as the cause in the notes.  I wonder if it makes sense to put the first part of the claim in early, ie examinations and drugs, to see whether the first part is paid, which may give you a heads up before agreeing to an MRI scan?

Its ok to feel overwhelmed when times get difficult and your vet may well be able to give their opinion on this case.

Thank you for your lovely reply. The bite was as a result of a tissue being taken off her and I am confident it’s not linked, albeit the fear is that the insurance company may try and link it to avoid paying out. My vet is amazing and I know she’ll support us along the way. It’s the uncertainty on top of seeing my dog struggle which is causing so much upset. I’ll speak to my vet and see what she says about claiming for the meds etc, that’s a really good idea, thank you 😊
