Hi! My 10 month old lab puppy all of the sudden has a scab/lesion on his hind leg. We haven't noticed any licking, biting, scratching or if there was an initial injury to this area to cause the scab?
Ironically, on the same hind leg, he recently was going through some growing pains the vet said and had a limp that is slowly improving. Not sure if either of this is related or not, but wanted to see!
Hello - is there definitely a scab ( dried blood) or might these be scales? Scales can form when neighbouring skin layers become thickened - perhaps the cells don't cling (adhere) to their neighbours well enough, or alternatively cling to one another too well, and peel or flake off in chunks. Dietary factors can influence cell adherence, but also implicated could be parasites, Ringworm, licking, pain (eg over a joint), hormonal factors etc. Sometimes tests need to be done in order to separate one cause from another, so it's a problem worth sharing with your vet. Another possibility may be thickened skin due to a callous forming from abnormal weightbearing eg when an animal drops to their knees a lot. Tumours etc may also be possible. Your vet will usually come up with the most likely differentials and go about trying to rule them out. Please do let us know what they find.
