So, in the same way that a dog with diabetes will need insulin on an ongoing basis, a dog with a skin inflammation involving the anal glands may need chronic or regular treatment. Some other underlying causes may need to be addressed, for example pain in the area (leads to licking), constipation, allergy, yeast infection and so on. I cannot see the picture of the dark spots at this moment in time - will check later on a proper computer - but dark spots can relate to anal gland discharge / yeast infection, but also to things like melanoma which is, of course, a different concern entirely. We would reccommend going back to your vet and asking what may have caused the problem, as well as how to treat it. Prepare yourself for the possibity that if your vet can't be sure, then further investigation or trial lifestyle changes may be needed.
