My mom's dog has had a hard time. About 2 weeks ago, he was bitten by a rattlesnake and he was hospitalized for a couple of days and had subdermal bleeding for a few days after. Last night he became sick with something that may or may not be related. Started middle of night. Went to vet... they think it is allergic reaction to environmental problems. High mold and ragweed here. But never saw something like this and no change in location. Cries all the time even with trazadone, gabapentin, and benadryl. Couldn't breathe right last night. Acts like head hurts....? Never had this before. Shakes his head. Lots of drool coming out of his mouth. Squinty eyes. He seemed better at the vet, but now he's home, whining, crying, and even screaming sometimes. Could really use some guidance.

Hi - that sounds really hard to watch.  It sounds as though he is drooling, head-shaking and showing signs of pain, which he's potentially masking at the vets.  That history suggests to me that the drugs are not working and the cause of the signs isn't known.   It doesn't bother me that the cause isn't known  - sometimes diagnosis is a long process - but it bothers me that he still sounds uncomfortable and therefore may need more pain releif, investigation or support at this stage.  I wonder for example whether he might have something stuck at the back of his mouth?  If you can phone-record examples of the signs as you are seeing them, that may be really helpful, but for me it would be worth another vet visit in the short-term.

It is often a good idea to call your vets and explain what you are seeing in order that they can re-triage (work out the priority level of, and possibly the early steps required to treat) the case.
