Vets
My 4yr old gsd/collie mix Kali was playing and let out a screech and started limping. Took her to the vet, they did X-rays, said they didn’t see anything obviously broken. Her right hock was very swollen and warm to touch. She took Carprofen for a week and is still limping. The generalized swelling has gone down but now I can see a distinct second lump just below her right hock. Do you see anything concerning in the X-ray or have any thoughts as to what might be going on? My vet only suggested referring to an orthopedic surgeon which is like 3 hours away from me.
Hello - Gosh! That sounds a long way for an orthopaedic referral. Are you in the uk? I'm afraid that we do not provide second opinions on radiographs, as we have less information available to us than your first opinion vet does, so commenting isn't very useful or professional. However, we would urge you to get this latest development triaged by your vets in case further action is needed and a fast return to your vet as required - it may give them some clues.
If you do not intend to travel for the referral, we would always reccommend updating / telling your vet anyway, as they may assume that something is receiving information when it isn't. You could ask them, 'What possibilities are still on the list?' and 'what other options are available if we cannot visit the specialist?' - please would you let us know how you get on?
