Any ideas as to why my girl just licks and licks and licks the floor? Mika is an 7.5 yo long haired dachsund that's about 18lbs. She has Cushings Disease and is/has been on Vetyrol for about 2 years now. She probably starting licking the floor about 2 years ago but it's gotten SO much worse. If she's up and walking around, she's licking the floor. If she's on the couch beside you and not sleeping, she's licking the couch.....not her paws either. We've tried anti anxiety meds for about 10 weeks no change. Trazadone just makes her a VERY sleepy dog, so that's not really an improvement in quality of life. We also tried some sort of doggy pain med that the vet gave us for 2 weeks. Nothing changed. Recent blood work is fine. Her appetitie is great.(its always been ravenous since like age 2 or 3; due to the cushings I assume)... Anyone have any ideas on what to try? I'm so tired of getting after her for licking the floor. You can just see tongue marks all over our floor.

Hello - floor-licking is often a sign of nausea and I wondered about a couple of thigs.  One is pancreatitis, which makes dogs feel nauseous and doesn't show on routine bloods. It is often diagnosed from its clinical signs and ultrasound. The other is Addisons, which is the opposite of Cushings and therefore a potential side-effect of Cushings medication.  This can be serious, hence the regular blood checks that your dog is on.  If concerned, your  vet may ask you to check the potassium around time that the behaviour is happening.  There is, of course, a huge array of disease characterised by nausea and by excessive water-drinking.  As the pain meds didn't seem to help, it may be well worth returning to your vets, in order to rule other things out.  'What's on your list of things this could still be?' and 'What can we do to rule out any of those?' are two excellent questions.
