Hello there. This picture is a little out of focus, but I wonder whether we could be looking at blackheads / comodones, ie plugs of oil and dead skin cells forming in the hair follicles. If this were to be the case, it would be a symptom rather than a diagnosis and the possible causes are mutiple. These can include hormonal diseases such as hypothyroidism (common in middle aged dogs), cushings, demodex mites and breed specific problems (especially schnauzers). For this reason, talking it through with your vet the first time at least, is advisable. If they were to be comodones, there are various products available for treating the surface of the skin. However, comodones are often a sign of underlying disease or hormonal conditions and your vet, who can see the whole case in context, may help to rule this in or out and address them as appropriate.
