Hello, is Baytril a effective antibiotic for a dental abscess in a dog?  Mine was prescribed this three days ago but has yet to show any improvement at all.  I've read there are a couple others that would possibly be a better choice for this situation.  Thank you so much for your time

Hello.  Sometimes dental infections are painful and pain releif / temperature reductions make a much more immediate difference to a patient's appearance than an antibiotic, which can take a few days.  There are several antibiotics that can be used to treat dental infection in a dog and they include enrofloxacin (marketed as Baytril), although this is one of the 'heavy guns'.  If you are ever concerned about a vets antibiotic use, it is always good to ask them about it.  Good questions include:  what response are you expecting over what time period?  When do you want to see us back?  And, if you are interested, 'What made you choose X antibiotic as opposed to antibiotic Y?'   I hope that something there helps.

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer my question.  I spoke with his veterinarian finally this morning, and per his recommendations we'll finish the course of antibiotics as prescribed.  He's been scheduled for a dental cleaning/extractions in about a week to completely resolve his problems thankfully. 🙏🏻
