My cat who is about 16 years old has just started attacking his tail. Otherwise healthy. Is this normal?

If it’s a sudden change in behaviour and you’ve not seen it before then I’d be a little bit concerned. There are a number of possible causes, but pain in the tail would certainly be on the list - sadly, so would medical conditions such as an overactive thyroid or a brain problem. I think it would be a good idea to get him checked out by your vet. If he’s just having a surge of playful kittenish behaviour, that’s great! But if there’s a medical cause, it’s better to get in top of it early.
