Hello, I'm posting for some help with my worries. Today I drove past a cat on the side of a country road, I stopped and as I got closer I could see the cat was definitely dead, it had a collar on and a tracker, unsure what to do I called a friend to come and help me (as I didn't have anything to carry the cat in) I picked the cat up and moved it out of the road, it had blood in its mouth but nowhere else but I'm assuming had been hit by a car. As I was waiting the owner came and found the cat, and of course was devastated, I held the cat whilst she went and got a bag to carry her in. My worry is because I handled a dead animal (pet or not) does this pose a rise for infection/disease to me, I'm not sure how long the cat had been there, I would hope not too long considering noone else had stopped and the owner showed up whilst I was waiting. But I drove home and washed my hands, should I be worried about my car/hard surfaces I touched before washing my hands, and should I be worried about my own pets? It was such a horrible thing to see and I just couldn't drive past somebody's pet, even though I didn't have any protective clothing or anything, I know people might think why did you touch it but I didn't want it to get run over more for the owner to find her. So just advice on how worried I should be would be super helpful, what I should do next if anything? Any advice would be good Thank you

Hello and thankyou for taking the time to care about this cat.  I'm sure that the owner appreciated it - I know that I would have done.   In general, freshly dead animals are not so different in terms of disease risk from the healthy animal that they would have been a short time previously.  You are right to have washed your hands.
