Hey everyone I'm looking for some advice with my baby he's 13 Last year overnight his eye went like this I'll attach photo below with dates. He seemed fine in good humour when we noticed that morning. Brought him to the vet straight away who said it was horner's eye and gave him some drops for his eye and ears. They said it should go in a few months. Few months past and still had it so brought to another vet who told me he had a stroke and that's why his eyelid has dropped. They have him on painkillers which I give him every day. But no sign of him coming off the painkillers as they just keep renewing it. I'll also add the pic off meds he is on. It's over a year later and its getting worse Now it's like a layer is starting to cover his eye completely. I don't think he can see out of it Is there anything I can do for him? Will it just keep getting worse? Has anyone gone through this and with their doggo?IMG_20210728_025936_edit_586441449461035IMG_20210728_030043

Hello!  Horners' is a syndrome, or a set of clinical signs, rather than a diagnosis.  So while it may describe what's going on (to use posh terms, it's ptosis, miosis and endopthalmus, occuring together) - it doesn't explain why that has happened.   More to come.

The general reason is something interfering with the sympathetic nerves to the eye - the nerves which control muscle tone in that area, including aperture size.  However, without knowing what is causing it in any one dogs' specific case, it is difficult to predict an outcome......

Possible causes include inner ear infections, knocks to the face and, worryingly, underlying tumours.  It sounds as though your current dialogue with your vet isn't giving you the information you want, so I would advise asking questions like: What are the potential causes most likely to be in this case?  Is one cause any more likely that the others?  Are there any tests they would recommend to isolate the actual cause in this case?  In some cases MRIs may be necessary to reach a full diagnosis eg to rule out tumours.  So, depending on your vet, referral may be necessary for a full answer. In the meantime, it sounds as though your vet has been trying antibiotics to rule out / treat possible infections. I'm sorry not to provide any answers here, but hopefully that gives you questions to ask your vet.
