My dog has been scratching excessively lately, and I'm not sure what's causing it. I've checked for fleas and ticks, but haven't found any. Could there be other reasons why my dog is itching so much? Any advice on how to help alleviate his discomfort would be greatly appreciated!

Hello - and yes, I'm afraid that there are many potential causes of this common symptom!  These can include mites (e.g. Scabies), allergy (e.g. to pollen), pain (e.g. abdominal pain can result in attracking of the overlying skin), anxiety, boredom, fly-bites, skin cancer, heat rash, foreign-bodies and likely more besides.  Where allergens might be building up on a dogs' coat, a daily foot-bath or swim can sometimes help to reduce them.  In this case however, the itching sounds to be affecting the patient's quality of life, so a veterinary visit is reccommended.  Getting to the bottom of itchy-skin cases can require multiple visits.  There are often two goals:  to establish the cause, and to releive the symptoms.

Today I took the dog to the veterinary clinic. She was examined and no ticks were found (although I suspected their prezence). The veterinarian did not find any pain that could signal cancer (thank God). Now I remember that recently I was walking my dog and she sniffed the flowers, and also got a little smeared with mud when she was playing. I'm taking her to the bathroom right now to give her a good wash. I hope this helps. Thank you very much again!

Usually, if skin disease is itchy, parasites (fleas and mites rather than ticks), allergy and chronic pain (eg arthritis) are the main culprits.  Please see your vet however.
