Hi, I have a 10 y/o dachshund/bichon frise mix (17 lbs) who’s not eating much throughout the day. I will provide a quick summary of events that have occurred in the last 2 weeks. 11/25 Thanksgiving Day- she jumped and pinched a nerve in her back. Was taken to animal hospital and injected with buprenorphine. 11/26- she was taken to the animal hospital again for pain. She was injected with buprenorphine and prescribed gabapentin (took 1 dose this day) 11/27- she was taken to her regular vet. Got X-rays done and blood work. Everything came back normal. She was prescribed metacam. Metacam was given (35lb dose on the first day). Later in the day, she experienced diarrhea. 11/28- diarrhea continued, but now with blood. Metacam was stopped and she was given gabapentin for pain. She ate 2x this day- puked her last meal. 11/29 - diarrhea continued with blood, she vomited pink liquid. She was taken to her vet this day. She was prescribed - carafate suspension 2cc 2x/day (PINK) and metronidazole benzoate 3cc. She refused to eat on this day. 11/30- 12/02- diarrhea with blood continued. She refused to eat on these days. Medication (carafate and metronidazole) given. 12/03- started showing signs of improvement. No more diarrhea. Stool was back to normal and she started eating again (2 meals). Medication (carafate and metronidazole) given. 12/04 she ate 2 meals, everything looks normal. Medication (carafate and metronidazole) given. 12/05 she refused to eat this day- bowel movements look normal. Medication (carafate and metronidazole) given. She will eat turkey deli if offered but nothing else. 12/06: refused to eat most of the day. I hand fed her wet food at night and she ate it fine. Medication (carafate and metronidazole) given for the last day. 12/07- refused to eat her food. Will take bacon (dog snacks) and turkey deli. 12/08- refused to eat her food. Had gas in the morning. Ate grass when taken outside. Will take bacon only. Steamed rice was offered, she only sniffed it. I am concerned that she’s not eating. Prior to 11/25, she would eat 2-3x/day. It’s unlike her to not eat anything. What do you think is going on?? I just want her to be back to her normal self 😞 it’s so hard not knowing what she is going through or what she might be feeling. I plan on making an appointment with her vet tomorrow. Hoping they have openings soon. also, I spent the whole week with her at my parent’s  house and went back to my house on 12/04. Not sure if this might’ve affected her as she’s really close to me.

Hello!   I'm pleased that you have that vet appointment booked.  Two possibilities that jump into my mind are pancreatitis and pain.  Pancreatitis is common in middle-aged female dogs and requires a special blood test to diagnose it.  Pain not so much.

....sorry, I pressed return by accident.    Pain is more general and can be a sign of many different things (pancreatitis being one of them).    I hope that the vets can get to the bottom of it for you and please do let us know how you get on.

Classic signs of pancreatitis include lying down with the bum in the air to stretch a painful tummy (but not every day with pancreatitis does this).  It can be exacerbated by a few days of fatty diet and can be a diet-related issue in general, although not every dog with pancreatitis is overweight.  Other possibilities can include bacterial infections and liver changes (most of which would be ruled out on bloods), and sometimes even cancers.  However, it is hard to know which it is in her case at the moment;  you appear to be taking the right steps to finding out.

Thank you for responding. The soonest appointment I was able to book was for Saturday (2 days). The one thing I noticed was that she was stretching more than usual  on Sunday and Monday this week. She always stretches but I noticed that she would do it a lot more frequently. Other than that, I haven’t seen anything else. I’ll follow up after her appointment. I’m hoping her vet will be able to give us some answers.

Hello!  It shouldn't be up to you to interpret the labs.   Usually your vet does that, and trains very hard for a prolonged amount of time in order to be able to do it.  You are paying your vet to do this and they know the case intimately, so I am interested that you ask me.  I wonder if the vet didn't say what you expected to hear? Can you explain what was bothering you about them?
