About two weeks ago my german shepherd had back surgery and is still unable to walk. So he has no control of his bladder and lays on pee pads and they are changed when he wets them. The problem I see is his testicles are red and oozing blood. I think this is from the urine and irritating them. is there an ointment I could use to help this? If so what is the best?

Hello!  I wonder whether the question ought to be, 'does my dog need a catheter?'   as continual urine scold on such an area can be extremely damaging and painful.  A barrier cream may help, but a wash might be needed beforehand and this is still difficult in a dog of this size! - Although the issue might seem relatively minor given all that has gone on, it can quickly become a huge, painful one and we would strongly advise asking a vet to triage this new concern.  It might get a lot worse in a very short time, with a view to an appointment or at least short-term over-the-phone advice.    Best of luck.

Hello!   I wonder whether the question ought to be 'does my dog need a urinary catheter,' as he is coping with so much already and this (the scrotal skin) can get a lot worse in a relatively short time.  It sounds as though you are doing the best you can to keep him clean but in a large, painful dog this can be incredibly difficult and it may turn out that a cream is not enough to keep it in check.  That said, there are barrier creams that you may be able to try - please do talk to your vets abut this.  A triage appointment to establish the urgency of the situation, would be a good idea if there is a wait for an appointment at the moment.  Wishing you and your boy the very best of luck.
