Our 8 yo lab mix recently began having seizures (2 months ago). They were consistent for about 2 weeks so the vet put him on Potassium Bromide. This is the only medical issue that he has or has ever had outside of a bout with heartworms several years ago. He does have a little terrible getting around so we added a supplement chew to help with that. He is showing signs of extreme thirst. He obsessively looks for water when we take him outside.  Inside he drinks as soon as we out the water down and will drink the entire bowl and more if we allow it. He will drink so much he vomits if we will let him. According to the vet, his blood work is normal. We requested it for the seizures because we wanted to make sure there wasn't an underlying issue causing them. The seizures have slowed tremendously. He went about 6 weeks without having one and has been 3 weeks since the last one.

Hello - I'm glad to hear that Potassium Bromide helped your dog.   I'm sure you are aware that it doesnt stop seizures forever - ie If your dog has epilespy, then the seizures can be expected to return if the Potassium Bromide is withdrawn.  Polyuria / polydipsia ( a posh way of saying 'weeing too much / drinking too much' ) is a listed side effect of Potassium Bromide.  There are ways to reduce it; your vet may plan to reduce the dose; they might suggest a second epilepsy medication to make up the seizure protection, and so on.  Withdrawing water from these patients may damage the kidneys so is not recommended.  Obviouly I know little about your dogs' case but it sounds to be a good idea to contact your vets very soon, in order to find a regeime that is safe and works for everyone.
