Hello,
Due to a recent stroke, mother is unable to care for her dog who’s mostly blind. I brought the dog back home with me here in Lubbock, Tx. Pancha is a long-haired chihuahua. She can see shapes and shadows we assume, but it looks like her eyelid on her right eye didn’t form correctly and her left eye is mostly covered up by what looks like her inner eyelid. Is there anything that can be done? Also does anyone recommend any vets in this area? I’m willing to travel. I just want to get this baby help if I can. Two years of being blind I think is long enough.
Hello and thankyou for this question, which is always a nerve-wracking, scary one; can anything be done? I'm afraid that I can't be sure from here, but many eye problems are emergencies and you should be prepared that irreversible damage may have happened to that remaining good eye. However, even if sight cannot be restored, any pain, infection or inflammation can potentially be treated, so it is worth seeing your vet for that alone. The deterioration of the second eye could potentially also reflect a bigger, body-wide disease process, which your vet would pick up. I would expect any vet to consider Pancha's overall condition and quality of life and to prioritise well-being and comfort. Please do seek out their advice as soon as possible.
The 'Find Vets Near Me' section of this site will help you to locate a vet in your area. Wishing both of you, and your mother, comfortable times ahead.
