Hello! Occular (eye) discharge can develop for a number of reasons, including ingrowing hairs on the inside of the eyelid (often a distance deeper than the eyelid margin where eyelashes occur), infections (particularly if both eyes), respiratory problems, exposure to irritants, increased eye pressure or other blockages to the outflow tract of the eye where tears usually drain. There are also conditions where the lacrymal gland just produces too many tears. Any of these diagnoses would probably require treatment - indeed many of us treat eyes as emergencies until proven otherwise, so we would certainly advise calling your vet as soon as you can for proper triage.
