Hi, I have a much loved 12yo lab who, aside from being 12, is in excellent general health, living in North Yorkshire. Over the past 8 weeks she has developed an encapsulated mass on her lower right eyelid.  Causing no distress, but growing quite quickly.  Seen Vet who advised that it is benign, but needs surgical removal - minor procedure that would take less than 10 min (because we were worried about GA).  Was given an estimate which is more than the cost of a used car!  Of course we want to do the best for our lovely lady, and I am aware that costs are rising everywhere, but I wonder if anyone would be willing to give an indicative estimate for what ball park would be reasonable. Thanks in advance. Owner of a lovely lab

Hello!  There are going to be some factors that will make a big difference here.  One is whether bloods are going to be taken first, in order to assess the liver / kidneys / general safety of an anaesthetic for the older patient.  Another is whether fluids will be given - I usually recommend this in an older patient, in order to make an anaesthetic as safe as possible and improve the speed of recovery, but many practices will offer it as optional.  Another factor is whether or not you will send the lump away to be tested.  I haven't worked in general practice since Covid, but I will make a few enquiries.

Thank you so much for your reply.  Bloods have been recommended - that price is fixed.  It is the GA and then the procedure.  We have been advised not to bother sending for biopsy - vet confident is benign.  No mention of fluids, and overnight admission, nor of presumed antibiotics.  I obviously don't want to scrimp on caring for our beloved family member, but if I say that the price advised is more than annual dual fuel bill after price cap for, what vet themselves said would be 10min procedure, you might understand why I am seeking clarification...  The lump is currently about the size of a small blueberry.  Thank you so much for you reply.
