I was told by my vet about a month ago that my 4 yo doodle has mild hip dysplasia, was limping/crying on her right back leg and was given a PRN pain med with supplements. It’s a month later and she still has a weird gait but is completely active. I was wanting a second opinion on the X-rays I was provided with. Thank you!
Hello! The way to get a second opinion would be to ask your vet. People tend to assume that their vet will be devastated and see this as a rejection, but actually I love to be asked to get a second opinion by an owner. It shows that they can be open with me and I with them. If I (the GP vet) am confident in my opinion, a second opinion will help you to trust me and to get you fully on board with the treatment the patient needs going forward. If I am wobbling, I will be glad of the opinion of someone moreexperiencedinthematter than myself. However, the words in bold are important. If two similar vets are asked and say different things, how would you know whom to trust? Vets do try our best to be honest, but owners frequently pay / listen to the vet who tells them what they want to hear rather than the one who kniws the answer, so it is good if the heirarchy between the vets is properly understood. This is another reason we don't give second opinions on this site. Furthermore, your own vet has more information available to them, having examined the leg and evaluated these radiographs in the context of the patient, so their opinion frequently outranks mine. Best of luck.
