My cat is due to have her ingrown claws removed at home by a Cat Groomer. She would normally have this procedure done by a vet, who would give her an anti-biotic jab to prevent any infection, however, due to lockdown, my vet is only seeing emergency cases. My question is, what do I need to do to prevent infection and what products would I need to use?

Under UK law, we're not permitted to recommend medications on the forum, I'm afraid! To be honest, it would also be irresponsible for us to do so for antimicrobial drugs which have the potential to drive antibiotic resistance, without being the vet in charge of the case and knowing the local sensitivity patterns. Removal of a claw would be an act of surgery which is both illegal and unethical without anaesthesia - do you mean claw trimming? In any case, the overgrown claw if it isn't penetrating the pad probably doesn't pose an infection risk. If the skin is broken, I'd strongly advise bathing with strong salt water as an antiseptic and monitoring closely; if there are signs of infection (such as increasing heat or pain after the overgrown claw is trimmed) then is the time to contact your vet for the most appropriate medication. I'd avoid using honey - although it does have antimicrobial properties, it is difficult to work with and encourages cats to lick it off! Good luck!
