This is my lab/retriever mix Moose. He has this pea size lump, and feels like a frozen pea too. It does seem sore to the touch, with like a hard scab covering. We tried warm salt water and it did not seem to do anything, any tips or thoughts on this?

Sorry, I forgot to attach the picture. It is the bump under his whisker. IMG_3035

Hello - I'm afraid that there are multiple things that this can be, all with different degrees of concern.   The bases of the thicker, longer, sensitive hairs round the muzzle are more promenant that those of the normal hairs, but you will tend to know if one is abnormally large.  Problems at the bulb could include folliculitis, including that caused by a mite called demodex, by other foreign bodies or by an immune reaction.  Cysts, tumours, benign tumours and self contained local 'infections', or inflammations (not usually requiring antibiotics) are also all possibilities.  Your vet should examine it, feel the surrounding area and decide whether to sample the lump, wait or attempt treatment.  However, the culprit is often on the inside, so applying cream or bathing is only rarely chosen.  Please will you let us know how you get on?
