why would a vet give 3 syringes of clear fluid in an iv to euthanize a dog? there were no other syringes with colored liquid. and on the report it states they gave her 12 ml of euthasol and 12 ml of propofol. i know both of them have color to them

Hello!  There are some clear chemicals that might be injected into an iv during euthanasia.  One is a flush;  simply fluid (such as is found in fluid bags) with some anti-coagulant in it, used to check that a cannula is patent.  If for any reason the end of the cannula has slipped out of the vein, injecting pento could be painful, so a water test shot can avoid the risk of causing unnecessary pain.  It can also help to dislodge any mini clots that have formed in the cannula and help the injection to be smoother, so I would routinely flush before giving most IV drugs.  Another clear substance might be a sedative, something like Ketamine / Diazepam combination, to help relax an animal and help the procedure to go more smoothly, especilly if I thought there was any chance that the experience might be distressing.  If this is somehing you have witnessed, it ought to be absolutely ok to call the vet and ask them to clarify what the syringe contained.

Having read a little around this topic, Potassium Chloride is colourless and can be overdosed IV to achieve euthanasia, but it is only recommended in tandem with other anaesthetic / sedative meds.

on the papers it said they only used 12 ml of euthasol and 12 ml of propofol. and there was nothing colored. all of it was clear.

so can anyone answer that? i know euthasol is blue,pink or a purplish color. and propofol is a milky color. so why would they inject clear fliuds in her and nothing else?
