Hello vets, please keep in mind I do have a vet appointment booked but it’s not for a couple of days so I thought I’d try get some advice in the meantime.   My dog started making hacking/coughing noises 2 days ago. At first I thought something was stuck in his throat but it’s still happening. Plus he is not one to eat foreign object and hasn’t had bones or anything like that recently. Does this sound like kennel cough or something else? He was at the vets last Monday for the day but I’ve contacted them and they say there has been no reports of kennel cough with any animals. That’s the only place we’ve been since due to being in isolation and no one in the house has been around any other animals apart from our own. He is still acting normal, still eating and drinking without issues and there is no changes in his behaviour.   We also have a very bad mould problem in our home (in the process of moving) could this be causing his cough? Can the vet test this?   https://youtube.com/shorts/0IMT2zq3Dpw?feature=share   https://youtube.com/shorts/I83iz8O-7OE?feature=share

Hello!  Tracheobronchitis (the posh name for kennel cough) is  inflammation of the trachea / bonchi, which causes a nasty cough.  It can be caused by several different things, one of which is a bacteria called Bordetella Bronchiseptica.  The latter is very easily spread, indirectly (eg on objects, clothing etc) as well as by direct coughing.  However, there are other potential causes including other infectious causes.  It is not uncommon for owners to tell me that their dog couldn't possibly have kennel cough as it hasn't been anywhere and the cough to still go away with time +/- anti-inflammatories, just as one would expect.   Moulds, however, can cause coughing and are definitely important to mention to your vet.
