Hi all -- my dog has 2 week old puppies, and when one of them manages to crawl out of the puppy box, the mother frantically paces the room, but won't pick the pup up to replace it with the others. Can I somehow teach her how to do this?

Hello - you seem to suggest that Mum is doing this for the other puppies, but not for this one in particular.   It sounds as though it would be a good idea to monitor this pup specifically, check that it is getting milk and groomed and so on and have the vet check that all of the puppies are healthy. Your vet shoulde able to weigh the pups and will soon tell you if this one isn't getting everything they need. Im sorry that you have had to wait for this answer and realise that a week is a long time in the life of a pup.  I hope that things are impoving now.

Hi Liz,  I apologise, but I didn't word my query completely.  She won't pick up any pup that strays out of the box.  She's a good mum otherwise, and the pups are all well fed, and seem to be within a normal variance of size for mixed breeds.  It probably won't matter soon, as their eyes are open, and they are about to be moved to a "puppy room" where they can roam freely.  So, as just a matter of curiosity, is there  a way to encourage a mother to pick up her pups when she doesn't do it instinctively?
