Hello kind veterinarians, My 8.5 year old Great Dane has developed some lumps over the last couple years. All of which have been non-worrisome, so far. Lipomas and skin tags. This morning I found a smooth, hairless growth that definitely wasn’t there yesterday. It’s on the right side of her snout, close to her nose. She has a similar growth near her left eye but it has been super slow growing. I wasn’t super worried when I first saw this one this morning, but upon checking it this evening it seems to have ulcerated a little bit. So now I’m a bit concerned. 😞 It’s approximately 6mm x 6mm. Picture included. Seeking veterinary opinions please! Thank you so so much!D0334E86-37D7-408D-8BCA-651294A634C6

Hello!   Back when I was a baby vet, we used to 'look' at lumps and tell you whether we thought it was likely to be cancerous or not.  However, since I qualified, research has been carried out to test the effectiveness of vets' predictions about lumps.  The vets' opinion was written down and then the lumps were sent off for testing.  The shocking truth is, that the vets weren't right much more often than if they had guessed randomly.  Now that we know this, we handle lump identification differently. This lump still needs to be shown to a vet of course, but they might not be able to give you an opinion right away.  Rather, they may be able to explain the likely vs possible outcomes for this lump, and to help you to decide whether to monitor it, have it sampled (there are different ways in which to do this) or to try antibiotics / treatment for demodex folliculitis etc to see if it goes away. A high percentage of lumps in older dogs have a sinister side, so we would strongly advise booking an appointment.
