IMG_2728IMG_2729IMG_2727 Is this normal anal gland for dogs? TLDR: Do these anal gland look normal to you? I have no idea how it’s supposed to look like. Do zoom in to give it a close look into the two holes, like is that normal (inside) or are those worms?? Again, I just need to know if it looks abnormal and if I should worry.   Context: 13 YO male German Shepherd here, I noticed that he smelled foul and decided to investigate. He had never had any problems with the anal sac before, but I am relatively sure the smell came from here. I irrigated it with salt water, and then some colloidal silver solution just in case it was some infection. He isn’t well socialized at all, and is big so bringing him to the vet would be an issue. My current plan is to observe, maybe repeat the saline wash and colloidal silver, then if infection is suspected, give him appropriate doses of amoxicillin (he has had them before as antibiotics). Any input is appreciated.

Hello and thankyou for this interesting question.  In answer to which, no this anus doesn't appear normal;  the anal mucosal area is poorly differentiated and the two nodules, which could represent drainage tracts from the anal glands or some kind of lump / parasite, are certainly unusual in appearance.   I feel that your dog needs to be seen by a vet and a history (both medical and geographical) fully understood before decisions are made as to whether further testing is needed.  Wishing both of you the best of luck.

You do not explain in your post where the Amoxicillin would come from in the case that a vet is not involved.  This is a UK site and here, dosing with Amoxicillin without the involvement of your dogs' vet would be illegal.   Furthermore, I would wonder if there were disease processes going on other than bacterial infection, for example inflammatory or neoplastic causes.  Please will you return to your vet, consider identifying the cause of the abnormality and let us know how this case progresses?  Wishing both of you all the best from here
