Hello - please note that we are a UK site and these answers won't hold true e.g. in the States. In the UK, here are some things to think about:
- When you say that you want it to 'work,' do your want to kill the fleas on the cat, the eggs on the cat, or treat the eggs in the environment - and do you appreciate the differences?
- Do you need to treat the whole household?
- Some supermarket products will do these things, but you need to pay close attention to how they need to be used, to form part of an effective flea strategy in your household. Extra hoovering and follow-up treatments are frequently needed.
- I cannot recommend drugs for a patient that isn't mine, but in the UK a qualified pharmacist can supply drugs that pet-shops cannot. More importantly, they ought to be able to supply products appropriately to the situation. Vets - and some nurses - will have access to the widest range of products and should be best placed to give advice as dogs are their speciality. However, pharmacies that supply over-the-counter flea treatments (literally, go to the counter and ask for a chat- no point picking a supermarket product up from the pharmacy shelf) can also offer a good quality service.
I hope that something here is useful.
