Would a vet be able to recommend an over-the-counter flea treatment for cats that works? I look after my elderly neighbour’s cat and she is happy for me to give him preventative flea treatment but doesn’t want to take him to the vet to get prescription flea treatment. I’ve tried Frontline with other cats and it didn’t prevent fleas. Most people I have asked who work with animals (vets, animal charities etc)  say over-the-counter flea treatments don’t work. Is there a vet that could recommend one that might be better than the others? I live in the UK and the cat is a British shorthair weighing over 4kg if this helps. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hello - please note that we are a UK site and these answers won't hold true e.g. in the States.  In the UK, here are some things to think about:
  • When you say that you want it to 'work,' do your want to kill the fleas on the cat, the eggs on the cat, or treat the eggs in the environment - and do you appreciate the differences?
  • Do you need to treat the whole household?
  • Some supermarket products will do these things, but you need to pay close attention to how they need to be used, to form part of an effective flea strategy in your household.  Extra hoovering and follow-up treatments are frequently needed.
  • I cannot recommend drugs for a patient that isn't mine, but in the UK a qualified pharmacist can supply drugs that pet-shops cannot.  More importantly, they ought to be able to supply products appropriately to the situation.  Vets - and some nurses - will have access to the widest range of products and should be best placed to give advice as dogs are their speciality.  However, pharmacies that supply over-the-counter flea treatments (literally, go to the counter and ask for a chat- no point picking a supermarket product up from the pharmacy shelf) can also offer a good quality service.
I hope that something here is useful.

Here is a convenient blog post on that very subject!   If you type 'prescription flea treatment' into the search-bar on our blog, you will bring it up - otherwise cut and paste the link into your browser. https://vethelpdirect.com/vetblog/2023/02/21/cat-flea-treatment-is-prescription-really-best/
