"Hi! I need some help identifying the gender of my 3 kittens. I've attached clear pictures (below the tail) to make it easier. Can anyone help me figure out if my kittens are male or female? I'd really appreciate your expertise and advice. Thank you so much in advance!"20241212_12455420241212_12434620241212_124608

Hello - and first of all, please be very very clear that while telling standard females from standard males from a clear photo should be easy, there are all kids of factors - intersex cats, blurred pictures, camera angles and so on - that make this process less reliable than it should be.  Furthermore, at point of sale there should be more gleaned from the examination than the sex, so the kittens would still benefit from a proper examination at this time. The reason I mention that the process may be unreliable is, that I am not wholly sure about these cats.  Cat 3 is distinctly blurred and I must admit to being unsure even which of the dark marks closest to the tail represents the anus.  Cat 1 may be a normal male when viewed from the correct orientation in real life, but I would want to see this because the photo is not clear enough.  Cat 2 I *think* is male but given my uncertainty with the others, I feel that it would be justified to have a vet look in person.  The key to the internet having any place in veterinary consulting is, that we are honest when something is not clear.

However, I can tell you how to sex a kitten and you might do this for yourself.  First, have someone else hold them, the correct way up, perhaps in the nook of an arm, with the tail raised to show the back view.  It is difficult for beginners to hold and look at the same time.  Then, identify the anus;  the hole furthest away from the floor, with a sphincter (i.e. it looks tight, closed).  Below the sphincter, males will have a gap of maybe 2 fingers thickness (depending on kitten size) and then another round opening, the end of the penis (points backwards in a cat).  Females will have barely any gap but a short slit instead; the anus and the slit together look like an upside-down exclamation mark.  The internet is full of examples to compare against but, if you are at all unsure, please get your vet to check for you when you take your kitten for their regular checks.  There are some kittens that aren't obviously male or female and perversely, it is a sign of competence to say 'I don't know.'
