My dog got in a kerfuffle with another dog. After, we checked and everything seemed ok. So this could be from that - or something else entirely. I noticed a scab so I washed it out, used antiseptic, and applied antibiotic ointment. Pup seems totally fine and is up to date on vaccines. Do we need to visit the vet?
Hello! I'm sorry to hear that. This one can't be assessed from this photo alone. Some wounds can be deeper than they look and cat-bite wounds in particular can become badly infected (eg if the bacteria on the teeth pass deeply enough into the damaged tissues, take hold and cause an abscess). In these cases, rinsing often doesn't solve the problem - a high temperature can be an early sign. However, more superficial nicks can heal well when treated topically (ie at surface level). Other times, pain and self trauma make things worse. I am obviously not your vet and havent examined the patient or taken a comprehensive history, so I'm not allowed to instruct you. Perhaps you could call and ask for the case to be triaged? I notice that this reply has been waiting, however - so you may have an answer by now.
