It is wrong to assume that protein in the urine is caused by cystitis without considering kidney problems. Protein in the urine can be an early sign of kidney disease and is one of the signs in the IRIS kidney scheme. There are other problems that can make cats' urine look yellow, so concentration should be measured in the form of urine specific gravity in order to assess the kidneys using the IRIS scheme. If present, the earlier kidney disease is picked up, the more that can be done to help. Therefore, although it is a great move to encourage all cats to drink, we would also advise dropping a fresh sample of your cats urine off with a vet or arranging a consultation and walking in with a sample in your hand, in a clean, dry container.
