First, I'm sorry for your loss - it's always a horrid thing to witness. The correct thing to do, as is often the case, depends on a lot of things. The majority of stillbirths here in the UK are not connected to infection. However, because whelpings can be conneced with Brucellosis or bacterial infection, particularly in other parts of the world but occasionally in the UK, the best thing to do may be to clean up thoroughly, especially if the Mum is not paying excessive attention to the pup. Cleaning up 'properly' can be quite technical and I have no idea where you are or what situation you are in. Therefore, please call your vet - or their out of hours service - for instructions and follow them carefully. This should help to have minimal risk of infectious contamination.
