Puppy born dead

Need a quick response please. Our female dog went into labor today. Our power went out and went out to start our generator. Came back less than 10 minutes later and she had given birth to the first puppy which unfortunately is stillborn. Soon as I noticed I picked it up and tried to rub it's chest/belly for stimulation but it's completely limp. Should we take the puppy away right away or wait for more to be born and then take it?

First, I'm sorry for your loss - it's always a horrid thing to witness.  The correct thing to do, as is often the case, depends on a lot of things.  The majority of stillbirths here in the UK are not connected to infection.  However, because whelpings can be conneced with Brucellosis or bacterial infection, particularly in other parts of the world but occasionally in the UK, the best thing to do may be to clean up thoroughly, especially if the Mum is not paying excessive attention to the pup.  Cleaning up 'properly' can be quite technical and I have no idea where you are or what situation you are in.  Therefore, please call your vet - or their out of hours service - for instructions and follow them carefully.  This should help to have minimal risk of infectious contamination.  Wishing you and the mama dog the best of luck from here.
