Hi: I have a five year old Black Australorp hen named Percy. I am needing to re-home her as I will no longer have time to take care of her. She is very docile and friendly, and likes to be petted every now and then. She doesn’t make a lot of noise. She is a pet to me - I would really like her to be re-homed in a place where she will be well cared for and will not be used for cruel purposes like eating her. I live in Austin TX, just above the 290, and by Harris Branch Parkway. I wanted to ask if you know anyone who is looking for chickens who will take good care of her? I am not able to arrange transportation to take Percy anywhere myself so I would prefer someone who would be able to come to me and take her.

Hello.  Thank you for this interesting question and I'm sorry that it has taken longer than usual to answer. It is actually slightly outside out remint; we are an English company specialising in veterinary medical advice, so it is difficult to make a good recommendation.  Your local veterinarian will be able to tell you the current local rules within your state about keeping and transferring chickens.  Providing that transferring your bird is acceptable on this score, then I expect that a recent health-check from your vet followed by some kind of local advert would be a good start.

Vets are often aware of small-holders or other individuals locally who can help to rehome a bird, should their circumstances and health profile make transfer a sensible choice.
