I’m looking for a vets input and opinions on a picture of a dogs teeth. I’m adopting a rescue dog and I noticed that her teeth don’t look the best. Her left canine is cracked off and you can see some discoloured teeth. I know you have to examine things like this in person to really know the true condition and severity of the teeth but just judging by the picture how serious do you think it is? I can’t meet her in person so I’m not sure if it’s a risk I can take if she ends up needing major, and expensive, dental surgery.
Hi - at a glance, this dogs' lower teeth do not appear to be in a line, which would be 'normal.' I therefore wonder whether there has been a fracture historically, or a so-called shark-jaw (a congenital second row of incisors), or something else. I think it is always worth, with any dog, having a vet look over and thereby mitigate against the chance of a missed underlying condition, before a transfer of ownership takes place. A good 'rescue' in the traditional sense of the word will want a dog to go to a home where it will be loooked after and therefore should support you to get the right checks, practically if not financially.
Good questions for your vet might include 'What can you see here?' 'Is this normal?' 'What might the long-term implications be?' And 'Does anything need doing now?'
