My dog unfortunately ripped out 2 of his toenails completely the other day. When I finally found a vet that could work him in and took him there, all they did was flush it out and wrap it with gauze and compression wrap. They told me to keep it wrapped and apply Neosporin to it for the next few days. I asked about pain meds and they told me I could give Aspirin. I really dont feel like this was right especially as they never even told me how often to change the bandage or how much Aspirin to give him, I had to figure it out on my own. What would you have done in this situation? Should I take him to a different vet or continue with this treatment plan?

Hello!   The method you describe is not exactly how I would have treated this problem in a dog if such a case had arrived in my surgery.  However, your vet has a lot more context than me regarding the case (the know the breed and the size of the animal, how lame it is, whether there are concurrent conditions and so on).   I am therefore in a bad place to judge based on the information that you have given me and as you read in the terms and conditions, we do not offer second opinions here.  However, I am reading from the fact that you asked me, that you do not trust your vets' advice.  This is always a difficult situation and on best addressed using openness, and not by asking a different vets' opinion online.

So what should you do?  In your position, there are two options.  The first is to try to put your finger on what it is that you are not happy about, and call the vet up and ask them.  Most of us enjoy this;  it is nice to involve clients in clinical decisions.  The second - perhaps if you still don't agree - would be to ask to be referred to a different clinician for a formal second opinion.   I hope that this helps.
