Scratching until wounds?

Hi everyone. I’d like to explain a bit, Ive never had a dog before and due to some issues with my friend I had to adopt his husky dog. She’s 4 years old. She’s been living with me for 3 months now and I noticed that sometimes she’s scratching. At first I thought maybe it’s fleas so I got her treatment for fleas, she seemed to stop scratching herself. But recently she began scratching her nose until it makes wounds and bleeds. I’m really worried about that. I tried applying some cream for it to heal and generally for some period of time she stopped scratching, but then again today she scratched nose until bleeding. And I’m super worried because I don’t want her to feel pain or suffer, so I hope maybe you can help me

Hello and thank you for this question and the extremely interesting pictures.  There are many causes of itchy noses and a common one is mites.  Indeed, ruling out scarcoptic mange, demodex (which doesnt usually itch) and fleas may be an important step in working this case up - if present, they are quick and easy problems to treat / rule out. However, I note the neatness and regularity of the hair loss and the breed concerned, and wonder whether there isn't something else at work here;  in particular, zinc-responsive dermatosis which can indeed present as itchiness in affected huskies.   If this turns out to be the diagnosis, you will be pleased to discover that up to 80% dogs' symptoms will resolve with appropriate food supplementation, which makes it well worth looking into relatively quickly and early.  Other possible causes for the scratching of noses include allergy and dental pain.

Meanwhile, itching can damage the nose very quickly and easily, so it may be that some symptomatic treatment is indicated.
