My boy (10 yr old Pyrenees mix) has an enlarged spleen, suspected mass but not yet biopsied. Wondering if it’s considered necessary to go to a specialist surgeon for the splenectomy. My GP can do it sooner but he doesn’t keep them overnight and he and staff don’t have as advanced qualifications or equipment as the full hospital. However, he can fit him in several weeks sooner. So not sure if it’s worth waiting? Also do I need to restrict his activity while we wait in case it ruptures? Thank you

This is a really tricky situation. There are pros and cons both way. A splenectomy is a fairly common surgery, and I’m sure your GP vet is perfectly competent to perform the procedure. However, aftercare does make a difference, and there is always the (small) risk of complications in the 24 hours or so post op. While many masses have already spread, if they’re going to, at the time of diagnosis, there is always the chance that it hasn’t yet but might do so soon. I think that chance is low, but it is a real possibility. Restricting exercise probably will slightly reduce the risk of a rupture - but it won’t completely eliminate it, as if it is a haemangiosarcoma or similar, these typically rupture spontaneously if they’re going to. I don’t think there is a right or wrong answer here I’m afraid - there are pros and cons on both sides. good luck!
