This is my sons kitty Lexi. She’s an indoor/outdoor kitty (we live on a farm) She ended up getting really sick about 4 weeks ago. I took her to the emergency vet thinking she got in to some lilies. Turns out they think she has toxoplasmosis. She’s been on antibiotics twice a day for almost 4 weeks. She’s improved tremendously!!! But, she still has some lingering symptoms and I’m wondering if anyone has experience with a cat that had toxo and it effecting their brain. She won’t jump up on things anymore, she doesn’t scratch on things anymore, she goes up to the dog and other cats and gets in their face, which she never did before she got sick. Her one back leg kind of swings out to the side when she walks. She’s starting to play again, and run a little. I’m just wondering if she’ll ever get back to her “normal” self again, or if this is her new normal. Thank you!

Hello  - I'm sorry to hear all that your cat has gone through and am pleased that your vet identified the problem and that things are beginning to improve.  According to Cornell University, cats' neurological signs improve only slowly, but the cats that show some improvement after a few days of antibiotics do see the best improvements.  The end picture for your particular cat may be difficult to predict; neurons are slow to regain connections and often never do, but much of the 'action' happens in a place that is difficult for scientists to observe.  The vet who has seen the case is best placed to offer a prediction, although this is a niche area - I still have not seen many certified cases - so they might wish to refer or consult with an authority in infectious disease or a neurology specialist in order to get a better idea.  I wish you well; please will you let me know how you get on?
