Got prescribed some Trazodone for my Golden (29 kg, 2 years old). Gave him 2 x 100mg tablets 2 hours before desired effect and it honestly did absolutely nothing 😅 is that weird? I’ve seen some people say they give it to their dog the night before and then again 2 hours before the event, as this seems to work better. Vet also said we could do 3 tablets instead of 2. I will discuss with my vet when I see her next week, but I’m just wondering if I should be worried it didn’t do anything? What are your thoughts? Some extra information - we are wanting to give him anxiety relief for a long haul upcoming flight, which is why we’re trialling him now. He’s not great with new situations and loud noise etc so wanted to give him something that will ease this whole process for him a bit. He will be flying cabin. So I don’t want to drug him to a point where he’s completely out of it or it becomes unsafe for him to fly. Thank you!

Hello - at risk of being a disappointment, Trazodone is a medication with potential side effects like any other and I know comparatively little about how it will affect your individual dog.  Your vet should be best place to balance the need for a drug against the side effects and try to find the best compromise.   Furthermore, I would prefer any  solution, including not travelling, to putting a dog into a situation that they cannot cope with mentally.

Always ask questions directly of your vet if you are unsure about the suitability of a drug or dose for your dog.  Please will you let us know what happens?

Hello, not sure how to reply to comments so hope this will do. In an ideal situation my dog wouldn’t have to fly, but we’re relocating, and we’ve invested a lot of money in a private charter so he can fly in cabin with us. So really doing everything I can to make it easier on him. I just thought if he could have anxiety relief that would make the whole experience a lot easier for him, but equally, if it puts his health at risk, I’d rather not give him anything at all. I liked the idea of Trazodone cause I read a lot of positive experiences online of people who had given their dog Trazodone for a flight in cabin, so I assumed it’s a very safe drug for flying. I will discuss with my vet when I see them again of course, I just thought it would be good to get a few different opinions. Thank you very much
