Last week my apparently healthy 9 yo Shih Tzu x dog had to go to an emergency vet after getting bitten by a bigger dog. While under anaesthetic they discovered a weird growth like a thin-stemmed mushroom near his right tonsil.  Stalk about 2 cm long. Bloods normal except ALP slightly elevated. Vets said they have never seen anything like this before. I will be booking in for it to be removed and biopsied, but was hoping someone has experience of this type of growth as I’m fearing this is the beginning of the end for Zeddy. 😪

Hello - what an interesting case - and those are excellent pictures of something difficult to access.  It almost looks like an immature gonad, but it would have to be very lost and longstanding for that!  Much more realistic possibilities might include a polyp, which is a benign (inflammatory) growth on a stalk - I have never seen one presenting exactly like that in a dog - or a tumour; perhaps a wayward bit of tonsillar tissue / lymph node or even a strange reaction around a linear foreign body.  It's good to hear that your vet is trying to find out, objectively, what it is - I always find lab pathologists very helpful in their suggestions, both before and after the biopsy.  In general, vets are surprisingly used to coming up against presentations we've never seen before - the art of vetting is in carefully following first principals to work out the next right move.  Thank you for sharing this fascinating case and I would be fascinated to find out what happens next.
